Program Summary for the Certificate in
Reservoir Simulation

PROGRAM SUMMARY:
Sets forth the concepts and assumptions involved in mathematical reservoir modeling. Outlines the steps involved in a reservoir simulation study. Reviews rock properties, fluid properties and the mathematical description of fluid flow dynamics in porous media. Describes computer methods for setting up a numerical model and solving flow equations. Discusses practical applications of reservoir modeling and the use of special purpose simulators.
BACKGROUND LEARNING:
Complete the following IPIMS.ep Background Learning courses:
  1. Reservoir Management
  2. Reservoir Simulation
ACTION LEARNING:
Complete the following simulated job assignments:
  1. Reservoir Simulation - Apply analytical and numerical simulation techniques to the development, testing and refining of a reservoir model, and the generation of an optimal reservoir exploitation plan.

  2. Reservoir Model Updating - Update the reservoir model.

RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT:

Submit a short (3 to 5 page) original paper of publishable quality devoted to some aspect of Reservoir Simulation. Include one or more recommendations for applying technology, better operating practices or improved business practices within your company. Alternatively, you may prepare a research report summarizing recent developments in technology, business or management practices, with references, that will be of interest to your management. Your IHRDC mentor must approve the assignment topic in advance, and the final report must be accepted by your manager and the IHRDC mentor before credit is received.
